For us, the physical beauty and simplicity of this property is transcended
only by the ties to history during one of the most romantic and turbulent
times. The mid-1800's to early 1900's US History is marked
by great men who made this country what it became. Many of these great
individuals are known only to those who study them today. Major General
Leonard Wood may very well top the list of these incredible leaders.
Our property played an integral role in the life of Leonard Wood; he
refers to it throughout his diary entries.
To give you a small sampling of his accomplishments --
A Harvard Medical School Graduate who opts for the excitement
of the Army, who's first practical assignment was to take part
and survive the entire campaign to capture Geronimo in 1887. Actual
leader of Teddy Roosevelt and the "RoughRiders", Governor
General of Cuba during the Spanish American War. Later the Governor
General of the Philippines.
Leonard's life was so full as not to be imagined.
The House At Pocasset as Leonard Wood referred to it is a real chance
to step back and feel the sense of history that has taken place. House
and Barn sit on the property as they have for over 125 years. The house
and barn have been fortunate to have survived all these years virtually
as they were built. Every effort has and continues to be made toward
presenting the buildings and grounds as they were meant to be presented.
We eagerly provide reading material on
Leonard Wood
as well as
the historic surrounding area.
